WiFi Signal Booster

Posted in Geekies, Lifestyle on August 3rd, 2005

Stuck at low WiFi signal strength? I have a Linksys Wireless G router (WRT54G) in my brother room which connected to my Linksys Wireless G PCI Adapter with SpeedBooster (WMP54GS) is located in my room and connected to the internet throught the router. I always get really low signal strength, around 11Mbps. I have bought some Linksys 7dBi High Gain Antenna with SMA and TNC connector, I’ve tried them both on router and my PC, I got few extra boost in signal. I think these antennas are way overpriced, so I gotta return them to shop.

After asking few help, I come up with few solutions. I upgraded the router build-in firmware to HyperWRT v.2 firmware and boost the Transmit Power from 50% to 100% in Advanced Wireless Settings. This is the first solution I got so far, it did improved wifi signal a little bit.

I googled around and found a cheap (but effective) way to boost up my router signal by making a DIY 10dBi Corner Reflector antenna through this site’s instructions. It took me one hour max to finish the 2 antennas. This DIY project is so simple and easy. Now, I fully get up to 54Mbps and 90% signal strength. All this works saved me hundreds dollars on those High Gain Antennas.

i’v made two of these antennas, one for my router and one for my friends. we both have a single antenna and it worked fine for us. we got the best results by aiming the homemade antenna towards the area we wanted to use it in. because wifi signals bounce off shinny things, the homemade antenna directs the signal in the area you want to use. which boosts the signal. i also purchased a linksys wireless usb adapter for my other home pc, and tried it on my laptop and got about a 10% increase in signal from a further distance in the house. i think i need a better wifi card, cant be having a wireless network adapter out perform my laptop card lol

Her are a couple of links to the Pringles Can signal booster referenced above - I haven’t tried either one of these, but I remember reading something about them in Popular Science and they seem to work well from what I remember
